Land Use of Skillman NJ

Skillman is a small town in the middle of New Jersey just north of Princeton. New Jersey has been occupied since the 17th century. Over the years this small area has predominantly been farmland. Named after the Dutch family Skillman, the land was bought for two of the family's sons after moving out of Brooklyn. The forest was cleared and the area became an agrarian-based economy. The house I live in dates back to the 18th century when the area was all farmland. I imagine the plot of land my house used to be responsible for was much larger. Present day, our farm has been consumed by the suburbs like most of the town to support the emigration from the large cities nearby like New York or Philadelphia. There are still a few farms in the area, but the majority of them grow sod. Some of the surrounding towns still have a large amount of farmland where they grow feed corn, soy, and hay.

  1. Thank you for telling us about your home town! It sounds like your home has a very long history, and the land it was built upon. It would also be nice to know what the land was like before European occupation too!
